How to maintain orchids

How to maintain the orchid plants

1. Take care orchid plants upon arrival

When the shipment of orchid plants arrive the destination, please open the boxes as soon as possible and leave the plants on the dry place under the shade.

Please try to grow them with coconut husk or chacoal in new pot  as fast as possible. In the first week , the plants will look a little bit wilt and some leave will turn yellow and drop. It is normal due to a shock condition of the plants by the shipment. Later on the plants will establish new root and new shoot within 1-2 month. After that the plants will produce new flower stems within 2-3 month.

2. Orchids growing

Our orchid plants will have some medium (coconut husk). You can grow the plants in the clay pot or plastic pot that have many holes because the plants need aeration. You can use chacoal or stone put in the pot together with our medium then put the stick to hold the plants upright.

You can keep the plants on the table (good air ventilation) or hanging them under 60% shade  net. For Vanda and Ascocenda, you can hang them under 60% shade net. They do not need a medium in a pot or basket because they need good aeration.

For Mokara and Semiterete Vanda, the plants have no medium because they are top cut about 40-50 cms. height. So you can grow them as same as Dendrobium and Cattleya

3. Watering

The Orchid plants need good quality water as same as drinking water but rain water or water from the river or stream is ok. The underground water is not suitable for orchid plants due to the high salt contamination.

You can give watering once a day in the morning or twice a day in the morning and afternoon (16.00 hrs.) if the weather is hot.

4. Fertilizer for Orchids

You can use a solutable fertilizer formular 20:20:20 (N:P:K) about 50-60 gram per 20 litre of water. Please spray once a week in the morning.

5. Disease control for Orchids

You can use Captan (fungicide) about 20  gram per 20 litre of water + Carbendasim 15 gram per 20 litre of water  once a week. You can mix a fungicide with a fertilizer and spray in the morning once a week.

6. Pest control for Orchids

You can use Cypermethyl (insecticide) about 10-20 cc. per 20 litre of water + Clorpyrifos or Abamectin 10-20 cc per 20 litre of water once a week.  Please spray this pest control solution seperately from fertilizer and fungicide  in the morning or evening.
